It’s not a biology game—it’s actually a head game (like most things)

We’ve all heard it: “When I was younger, I used to…” from someone who was basically Superman or Wonder Woman before X happened or Y occurred. It’s usually blamed on age, responsibilities, or both. Easy to believe, right? Weren’t we all leaner and sexier at 20? Isn’t everyone around us battling weight gain, nagging injuries, or chronic time/energy starvation? It sure seems that way.
So how do we explain those rare creatures we spot in the grocery store or park—clearly middle-aged but in absolutely fantastic shape?
As a 50-year-old man who’s currently in the best shape of my life, let me share some hard truths that actually helped me get here.
We’re hindered by the tendency to romanticize the past
Younger you: Recovered faster, sure—but mentally weaker. You never pushed to your true potential because life hadn’t tested you yet.
Older you: You handle real-life stuff that’s far harder than any gym session (career stress, family chaos, financial pressure, etc.). But we let the slight changes we see in the mirror or on the scale tell us a false story about where we really are.
The biology part? Yeah, it’s real—slower recovery, declining hormones, less muscle-building efficiency—but it’s overhyped as an unbeatable wall. The real barrier is psychological: excuses disguised as “reality,” nostalgia for a softer past, and giving up before you adapt.
The truth? Getting in shape after 40 is harder in some ways (slower gains, more nagging aches if you train stupid), but easier in others (you know what actually works because you’ve lived enough to cut the BS, you have discipline from real-world battles, and consistency compounds like crazy when you stop chasing quick fixes).
