The Long History of Kettlebells and Swinging Weights

Think kettlebells are new? Nope. The earliest use of the Russian kettlebell dates back to around 1703. But ballistic weight swinging isn’t even confined to Russia.
- The swinging club-bell of India dates back to the 13th century.
- Shuai-Chiao wrestling in China uses a swinging weighted rod that looks wild in action.
- Persian swing clubs look like a baseball bat and a kettlebell had a baby.
- And before kettlebells became popular in America, we had York Barbell Swing Weights, which interestingly look and move a lot like the Shuai-Chiao short rod.
Why all this history talk? Because “Old School” doesn’t mean rusty weights and 80s rock. It means being grounded in proven principles and not getting distracted by the flashing lights and gimmicks of the modern age.
The point of this post: seeing how tools like swinging weights were created nearly simultaneously in different cultures that never interacted tells us something important. Our forerunners already knew that unstable weights were incredibly useful for building strength and resilience.
Good idea for us to take note.
