Think “Pudgy Stockton” sounds funny? She was a powerhouse. Abbye “Pudgy” Stockton was a strongwoman and pioneer of women’s fitness in the 1940s.
At 5’2″ and just about 115 lbs, she once balanced her husband Les (180+ lbs) overhead in a handstand—on her hands. She also wrote a women’s training column called Barbelles in Strength & Health from 1944–1954 and helped organize the first Amateur Athletic Union weightlifting contest for women in 1947.
Her life proves that women lifting weights isn’t new—it’s foundational. “Old school” doesn’t mean rusty tools or neon gym lights. It means respecting the tested, the durable, the truth built through sweat and consistency.
