I learned the hard way during my SWAT-Medic training days that, despite correctly identifying the “he is only gym strong” sentiment as a cope used by jealous individuals, small changes like terrain, gear, footwear, and elevation can indeed stress you in surprising ways. Once you’ve identified your base training needs and standards, you can incorporate more “real-world” concepts such as modified lifts and gear. Who needs an “Elevation Mask” when you can do your cardio in standard boxing headgear, gloves, cup, and mouthpiece? After a few weeks of this, my sparring sessions have become a tad more survivable, heh.
